Bird Nest Box Studies

During the 2000 nesting season, 4 of our nest boxes were occupied.  On May 26, a pair of house wrens started work on a nest in PNC#2.  The box was filled with conifer twigs but no signs of successful nesting was observed.  House Wrens have been known to use very small feathers, but this nest was lined with large Wild Turkey Feathers.  On the 2nd of June a broken house wren egg was observed in the box, no other eggs or young were observed.

In box PNC#5 we had the start of a nest, but was not completed.  It is believed that a pair of Tree-Swallows was responsible for this nesting attempt.

In early May, a pair of Bluebirds started to nest in PNC#6.  The nest was constructed from grass and lined with White Pine needles.  Sometime between the 28th of May and the 2nd of June 4,nestlings had hatched.  On the 2nd of June, the female Bluebird was banded.   On the 10th of June, 4 nestlings were banded and placed back into the nest box.  They fledged after the 16th of June.

The same pair of Black-capped Chickadees that occupied PNC#7 in 1999 reused the nest box in 2000.  The 7 nestlings hatched a few days before the 26th of May.  The 7 nestlings were banded on the 2nd of June and an unsuccessful egg was observed in the nest.  They fledged the nest between the 4th of June and the 10th of June.   No birds nested in boxes PNC#1, PNC#3 and PNC#4.
