Art Faire in the Forest

Pfeiffer Nature Center, Lillibridge Road, Portville, NY

Saturday, August 21, 2004

10:00 am – 5:30 pm

Previously called Art Slam, the name of this annual event has been changed to reflect its broader range of activities and vision.

Pfeiffer Nature Center and Cattaraugus County Arts Council collaborate to present this unique opportunity to simultaneously experience art and nature, enjoy great food, watch or participate in a variety of activities, support the two sponsoring organizations, and just have fun, whether you come alone or with family and friends.

At least 20 artists will create artworks on-site that day, using a variety of media to reflect the beauty of the site and the day.  Visitors are welcome to watch, ask questions, and get to know the artists.  Their pieces, along with those donated in advance, will comprise a live auction beginning at 4:00 pm.

But the day offers much more than a chance to watch artistic minds at work!

Children will be able to participate in a variety of activities designed just for their enjoyment, including nature arts and crafts, sun-dying, learning (or at least enjoying) calligraphy, and enjoying a few nice yoga stretches, among others.

Fun for the whole family includes a presentation on bird predators, with falcons on-site; a demonstration of the ancient technique of flint-knapping; ideas on how to make baskets that are both gorgeous and useful with locally-gathered materials; and a chance to watch a chain-saw artist create a sculpture with a tool not usually considered in the fine arts.  In the afternoon guests will enjoy two hours of live, unplugged music: Chris Piaggi on the bagpipes, followed by the Allegany Mountain Dulcimer Players.  Our six miles of trails will be fully available during the Art Faire, providing a chance to stretch your legs and your lungs, rest your mind, and drink in the beautiful surroundings.

Wonderful food will be available for purchase at the Art Faire, with Stage II Bistro providing lunch.  Homemade desserts and beverages will also be on hand.
